Location portraits, reportage and music photography: my three favorite things to shoot! Matis and his crew were super laid back and professional, and great to hang out with all day. Billboard sent up a team from New York including a video crew, all of whom did a fantastic job – check out the full On the Road feature here. A slideshow of my images can be found here. BTV 50 is an ongoing portrait project of entrepreneurs, artists, musicians and more who are making Burlington a great place to live. Nick, an Alabama native, helps bring all sorts of music to Vermont and has introduced me to bands and musicians I would never have known about otherwise. There are some killer shows on Higher Ground’s calendar this summer – check it out!

He showed up in support of Occupy Burlington and rocked out Start Wearing Purple and a few other songs from atop the fountain. Good times.

This shot of Elliot Martin from John Brown’s Body was one of my favorites from the weekend. I loved how small and intimate RFA was – other favorites included Medeski, Deitch and Skerik, and Soulive‘s kickass set on Saturday night which included a few Beatles covers from Rubber Soulive. All in all a really great time and I highly recommend folks make the trip next year!

Though the sound in Memorial Auditorium isn’t top-notch, the visuals were fun – giant disco ball, lasers, and an expressive James Murphy. Noise pop duo Sleigh Bells did a great job kicking off the show. The most fun part? Photographing drunk girls rocking out along the railing while Murphy belted out the lyrics to “Drunk Girls.” By far one of my top three shows this year. Catch them if they’re in town!

They performed pieces from their new album Drink the Sea, and played a really kickass show. Their setup is sweet – touchpads and electronic drum heads for each member, and lights tied into their music software to go along with the beat perfectly. A slideshow of my images is up at The Untz – an online magazine dedicated to electronic music and reviews.

Also wander on over to the Eve blog to see what we’ve been doing there – it has been an incredibly busy productive summer. Hope you are all having a great fall.

This is the beginning of a personal documentary project on festival life, which I’ll be building on in the coming months. I’ve been to a great deal of music festivals and it fascinates me how a community springs out of nothing, thrives, and then dissipates in a few short days. Liberate struck me, in particular, because it was such a small, close-knit festival with an incredible ambiance. Thanks to Ben and Jane, the organizers, for letting me be a part of this, the artists, for putting on amazing performances, and the fans for allowing me to document this moment of their lives.
