Photos of the Day: Local Food

So I just wanted to share a few photos from a project I’ve been working on this year, a long-term study of local food in Vermont. Since moving here in 2008, I’ve come to realize that we have it pretty good here in the Green Mountain State. We have a great variety and abundance of skilled farmers, and an excellent system in place for getting their food from the field to our tables. I intend to show the various food networks we have in place here, and eventually produce a piece that gets to the heart of Vermont’s local food culture. Many thanks to Open Heart Farm and Jericho Settlers for letting me hang out and photograph them at work! These particular images are from an early morning visit to Jericho Settlers yesterday, and I was so excited that I just had to share them.

EDIT: On a side note, Jericho Settlers and Open Heart both lost crops and livestock to Irene. This has been a difficult year for farmers and I wish them the very best in their recovery. Support them by buying local food! Coincidentally it is Eat Local Week October 1-9.

Green Mountain Camera Silent Auction

This should grab the attention of area photographers, collectors and photo enthusiasts: Green Mountain Camera is hosting a silent auction this coming Sunday to benefit the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund in Irene’s wake. My partner Judd and I have been regular customers of Green Mountain Camera for several years now, and I can attest to their great equipment inventory and commitment to Vermont.

They have a great collection of items up for auction (and more still being added!) including photo equipment and a bunch of awesome framed prints. I donated a piece from Iceland (featured on the blog earlier this summer). So, whether you’re looking to fill up empty wall space or add to your camera bag, come on over and check it out!

Photo of the Day: John Brown’s Body

I had a great time shooting the inaugural Royal Family Affair at Stratton last month. This shot of Elliot Martin from John Brown’s Body was one of my favorites from the weekend. I loved how small and intimate RFA was – other favorites included Medeski, Deitch and Skerik, and Soulive‘s kickass set on Saturday night which included a few Beatles covers from Rubber Soulive. All in all a really great time and I highly recommend folks make the trip next year!

After the Flood, Part 2

I returned to Waterbury last week to talk to more people and photograph the aftermath of Vermont’s flood damage. The stories and people I came across were both heartbreaking and inspiring.

Update: Found a Seven Days piece detailing flood impact on mobile home parks across the state.

Teresa, left, and her daughter Lisa cry after finding a box of David's belongings. David, Lisa's father, passed away in 1993. Relatives said they had to stop Teresa from going into the basement and getting the box several times during the flooding. They spent three days digging through mud and collapsed foundation in their basement to find it. Teresa lives in Whalley Park, a mobile home in Waterbury, Vermont, decimated by tropical storm Irene.
